CUSD 50 Staff Spotlight: Ivan Rada, Dual Language Social Studies Teacher at Harvard Junior High

"I was born in a town far from the capital of my country, Colombia, called Villanueva. However, my parents decided to move to the capital, Bogotá, and it was there that I grew up and completed my education. I studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences at the National Pedagogical University of Colombia. Later, I completed my Master's in Social Sciences and Humanities at the National University of Quilmes in Argentina."

"Having been born and raised in different places has allowed me to create a rich blend of cultures, ideas, and ways of being and thinking—something that defines me both as a person and as an educator."

"Becoming a teacher was the best coincidence life gave me. During my time in school, I met and learned from incredible and passionate teachers—teachers who not only taught their subjects but also shared valuable lessons about life and what it means to be a better human being. I took those experiences to heart and now strive to be the kind of teacher I always wished I had when I was a student."

"What I love about being an educator is the chance to be amazed every day by the unique and extraordinary stories of my students. Each day is a journey of discovering not only their deep curiosity but also their incredible creativity. It fills me with pride to know that they are learning from me—but even more meaningful is everything I learn from them."

"From the very first day, I was welcomed with warmth and kindness that reflect the strong sense of community and belonging that defines this district. The cultural richness present in every corner of this community makes it a truly exceptional place. It is a vibrant blend of languages, traditions, and emotions that come together to create a diverse, human, and inspiring educational environment."

"Learn to be grateful for and celebrate the small victories of each day. One of my favorite writers once said, "Many small people, in small places, doing small things, can change the world." Positivity is built in the everyday, in the simple, in the authentic. That’s where real change begins."
