Chartwells Update

I am sharing an update on our partnership with Chartwells, our food service provider in the District.  Two significant concerns were raised in early December at our Junior High.  We are very concerned about both issues raised and want to reinforce that improvements must be made.  Those concerns should be balanced by the awareness that over 420,000 meals have been served to our students this year.

I want to share with you some things that have already happened to guarantee that improvement occurs as soon as possible.

  1. Chartwells administrators have been on-site repeatedly recently.

  2. Chartwells leadership completed a comprehensive sanitation audit.

  3. The audit prompted training on best practices to ensure they exceed expectations on the local internal assessments they conduct.

  4. The causes of the two problems noted have been identified, and training to make corrections has already been established.

  5. All staff in the Junior High lunchroom will be working on sanitation and best practices training and re-training.

  6. The regional executive chef will be on-site next week to continue to review operations and provide additional training.

  7. In January, focus groups will resume with students to receive feedback on lunch services.

  8. Additionally, there will be a review of other building sites to ensure the quality of food provided for our students is of high quality.

  9. Review with lunch supervisors how to respond should a situation present itself if it needs to be done up to quality standards.

Please don’t be misled; this issue is critical to us.  In a district that offers breakfast and lunch to all students, we know just how important it is to ensure our kids are not hungry so they can learn. If we have a misfire, we fix it.  No drama, no fuss, just solutions.

Let me also remind everyone how to handle any concern regarding food or any situation you may face.  First, contact the building principal or teacher if it’s a classroom issue.  As the person closest to the problem, they are your first point of contact and the fastest way to find a solution.
