Harvard CUSD 50 Nationally Recognized as a “Lighthouse” School District
HARVARD, IL — On May 2, 2022, The School Superintendents Association (AASA) announced Harvard School District 50 as a “Lighthouse” system, serving as a model to transform America’s education system. District 50 was selected as they “exemplify AASA’s Learning 2025 Commission Initiative,” noted James Minichello from AASA.
“District 50 has so much to be proud of,” said Dr. Corey Tafoya, Harvard CUSD 50 Superintendent. “This national recognition affirms the excellent work done by our students, teachers, staff, and administrators. Five years ago, the Board of Education challenged me to help bring to light all the great things happening and elevate our expectations of what can be accomplished here. The Lighthouse System recognition validates our #HarvardRising mantra, an effort embraced by our community, students, and staff.”
Harvard CUSD 50’s Dual Language program was selected for designation by a panel of independent education leaders from across the country. With a mere 56 students enrolled at the program’s start in 2007, the program was recognized for demonstrating a commitment to the whole learner, no learner marginalization, and future-driven education. Only 13 school districts nationwide received this honor.
“I am thrilled our dual language program earned the Lighthouse distinction honoring the tremendous achievements of all stakeholders in Harvard CUSD 50,” said Dual Language Coordinator Amber Bowgren. “Dual language programming not only prepares our scholars to be future-ready, but it also enhances the social, emotional and cognitive skills of all children. Earning this distinction is extremely motivating for us to continue reflecting and enhancing our program.”
